Alaska Trip
Day Two
Morning view out the window of the Shilo Inn room
The weather today looks much better than yesterday
So, after breakfast we head out to the airport and while packing the
plane we watch
a couple of ANG F15's come in for landings - those suckers are LOUD!
We're on our way now, our goal is Canada but.... well you know that old
saying about plans
Just north of Klamath Falls is Klamath Marsh
We look happy eh?
We looked at the map and the sky and since Crater Lake was only about
20 miles off our course we decided to do a diversion
It's real pretty country up here in Oregon
Crater Lake was pretty spectacular
These are not doctored photos, I swear that was the actual color of the
water
It was a shade of blue I don't think I've ever seen before
We continued up the east side of the Cascades past the three Sisters,
Bend and Redmond
Then we crossed over the Columbia river into Washington
We stopped in Yakima, the plan was to just get gas, file a flight
plan, call Canadian customs and head on across the border
But we got distracted, Cub crafters is down at the end of the field and
even though they were closed
we went down to look around. You could hide from a bear behind these
Alaskan Bushwheels
There was also a small museum and a couple of neat old planes like this
Curtiss Robin
Now, talk about poor forward visibility - but it was one cool plane
complete with wicker seats
So now it's about 3:30. We discover that we can't fly in to Penticton
B.C. like we planned because customs is only
available there Monday through Friday. We also haven't even got our
flight plan filled out, let alone filed
So we decide to hang out in Yakima and get our stuff straight.
Tomorrow we'll try to make it to Mackenzie at the bottom of the trench.
