Pictures of dirt and rocks and haze
Remember the ubiquitous little old Cessna 150. At one time they were
everywhere. It's been a long time since I've flown one but as
a favor I agreed to ferry a friends 150 from Byron to Lake Havasu
The wide angle mirror was a novel idea that didn't catch on and
although I found it great for admiring myself I don't think
it ever served any other useful purpose in the air
The central valley was full of haze and fog that varied from 2 to 4 miles visibility at the surface according to the AWOS's
I'd say this is more like 6 to 8
Yea, me neither - I have no idea what that is
Some areas were much better but it got worse as I headed south towards Bakersfield
I fueled up at Bakersfield Municipal (L45) and climbed out of the haze which was about 4 miles vis below 1200 ft
Heading over the Tahachapi towards Mojave
You gotta admit, the little 150 was an honest airplane
And the heater really worked too!
Leaving all that nasty haze behind me now
Hey, there's the
Tehachapi loop!
Houses popping up everywhere these days
and I mean everywhere and anywhere - carving golf courses out of the desert
Eventually though the desert prevails
Not a single golf course out that way
As I head across the Mojave the sun starts to dip to the premium angles - I'm in for a treat
There are all kinds of deserts but the Mojave always struck me as the
one that most resembled what it might be like to go to Mars
For one thing, none of it is flat so even from the ground the grandeur and spectacle are stunning
But I don't think anything can beat a late afternoon, mid
winters flight in a 150 - at least not today. This is awesome!
No, I didn't get my PLB yet but as desolate as this landscape is, I-40 is just off the right wing tip within gliding distance
Like I said - is this Mars or what?
There's that interstate - my only connection to civilization
As the sun dips further the beauty of simple dirt and rocks bursts forth
are those cool shadows or what...
Lake Havasu is just over the next ridge
The colors start to rise to a crescendo as I approach my destination
Wow, this is really, really neat just gliding down in silky smooth air
I'm blessed just for the opportunity to experience this moment
Lake Havasu City - an enormous settlement in the middle of the desert
On downwind - was that not perfect timing?
Well, it just goes to show that you can have a total blast and travel in real style even with a lowly little old Cessna 150
